Why I learn Japanese?

Written by Mega Ai

It’s been for months since I start learning Japanese. My first Japanese teacher asked the students why are we interested to learn this language. Some students may want to go to Japan to continue their study. Some other students learn Japanese because they love manga or anime. Some other students love to watch Japanese movie and listen to Japanese song. Well, I ain’t really sure to answer when she gave me that question. Anyway, I have a desire to study in Japan, but it’s not that big until I want to learn the language. About manga or anime, I know nothing about it. And about the movie and song, I really love watching movie and listening music. But I don’t really like to watch Japanese movie or listen to Japanese song. So finally my answer was I learn Japanese just for fun.

Couple times ago, my second Japanese teacher asked the same question to the students, why are we learning Japanese. So our discussion became about mastering foreign language instead of international language. It’s more like a self quality improvement. Well, that makes sense for me. I want to improve my self quality to compete with the global challenge by mastering more foreign languages. But you know what I am thinking. The desire to compete the gobal challenge is not strong enough to make me learn Japanese well. I feel that I learn Japanese sooooo slow. Am I that stupid? I don’t think so. Nobody’s stupid anyway.

Well, I feel that learning Japanese is really different with when I learn English. You know I can spend many hours per day just to watch English movie. And I can spend many of my times just to translate many lyrics of the English songs. The more I don’t know about English the more I curious to know about it. But I don’t feel the same toward Japanese. One day I was thinking, do I have to stop learning Japanese and find the other language to learn? But then, I am thinking again, will I have a good desire to study other language? I don’t think so.

So, I decided to keep learning Japanese. I’ve started so I am finished it. I have to master this language no matter way. I’ve found one reason why I have to learn this language. Some of my best friends are Japanese. They are studying Indonesia and Indonesian. I can do the same. I am studying Japan and Japanese. For the sake of our friendship. Hehe.

But I still need to find SOMETHING that could be a mood booster to learn Japanese. Should I try to learn to love the movies, songs, or alike? Should I try to be curious about the country, the culture, the people, or alike? Should I travel there to find SOMETHING that I don’t have right now? Hehe.

Any idea?
